Welcome to the very first Why are we not funding this.
A blog dedicated to kickstarter projects, whether they are already backed by millions of dollars and still need more, or those hidden gems from which we think they deserve more attention.
Sometimes I wonder what ever happened to the good platformers out there in the world of video gaming. You know the Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong country games. There was a time this genre dominated the video game market. The Nes and Snes (and yeah Sega) game catalog were filled to the brim with these games. Some good, most bad.
Rare is responsible for some of the best games in history. Namely Golden Eye 64, Perfect dark, Donkey kong country and Banjo-Kazooie. The latter is being reincarnated into a new platform game made by veterans in the industry.
Rare did introduce and perfected the single player partner setup. Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter are more recent examples of this.
You as a player control two characters but play them as one. Most of the time your character has a wise cracking sidekick who is piggyback riding the “main” character. In some stages it is required you play the smaller one to solve puzzles so the larger character can continue.
This year in February a couple of veterans at rare thought Now is the time to go back to our roots and make some incredible good games instead like junk called Kinect sports…. Sigh… They rounded up all the talent and started Playtonic games. Everything about this company is fresh and lovely… hell even there contact mail address is Love@playtonicgames.com. I mean come on! In the world filled with asshole game developers who proudly rip off their fanbase by implementing insulting dollar throwing DLC. This company is the wind of change
And their first idea fresh out of the box is Yooka-Laylee.
In Yooka-Laylee you are in control of Yooka a chameleon and Laylee a bat. And more is not known on this moment. Other than that the chameleon and bat have some natural abilities that are awesome for platformer (think of blending into the environment, something with sonar, flying and some other happy jolly shit. They can play with the laws a physics as it is a funny platformer.
Why you should be excited? if you are into platform games as I am then it should be enough that the old rare team is creating this piece of upcoming history. And it seems that a lot of people are agreeing with me. They reached their pledge of $175.000 in under an hour. So far they reached a budget of $ 2,191,764 with 40 more days to go.
Are you excited yet? then follow this link
What started as a tribute to Banjo-Kazooie looks like to become a promising revival of the platform-genre. Let’s hope so.
